Acerca de Álvaro
I am a native Spanish speaker from Spain, and I have spent more than 15 years living, studying, and working in Puerto Rico. This experience allows me to help my students understand both international Spanish and the language they will hear and use in everyday life in Puerto Rico.
I have graduate-level training in language teaching and translation, and I currently teach at the University of Puerto Rico. I also work as a professional translator, with extensive experience adapting educational, technical, cultural, and creative content for audiences in Puerto Rico, the United States, Latin America, and Spain. I am currently completing a Ph.D. in Translation and Intercultural Mediation.
I am patient and attentive, and I take a genuine interest in understanding each student’s reasons for learning Spanish and their individual goals. I strive to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and gradually gaining greater confidence and independence when communicating in Spanish.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s level, interests, and real-life goals. I use conversation, practical situations, authentic materials, and clear explanations of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural context.
A typical lesson may include conversation and review, the introduction of a communication goal, guided practice, a practical activity related to everyday life, work, or travel, and personalized feedback to support continued improvement.
As a university instructor and professional translator, I pay particular attention to differences in register, audience, and regional varieties of Spanish. My lessons are designed for adults at beginner, intermediate, or advanced levels and can be conducted primarily in Spanish, with explanations in English whenever helpful.
